How Tourists Can Claim UAE VAT Refunds in 2026

A tourist VAT refund is easiest to claim before the suitcase goes onto the airport belt. The goods may need to be inspected, the original travel document must be available, and a purchase that was never registered as tax free cannot be fixed at the departure gate.

The UAE system has become easier to find. By the end of June 2026, about 19,340 retail outlets were connected and 100 self service kiosks were available. Ecommerce purchases can also qualify when the website is registered with the scheme. The basic preparation still begins at the time of purchase.

Who can request a tourist VAT refund

The scheme is for eligible tourists who entered the UAE as visitors, are at least 18 years old and are not UAE residents. The purchase must come from a retailer or registered website participating in the Tourist VAT Refund Scheme.

The minimum eligible spend is AED 250 before VAT for each tax free transaction. Not every product qualifies. The store must create the transaction using the same passport or eligible GCC identity document that the shopper used to enter the country.

Ask whether the shop participates before paying. A normal VAT invoice from a store outside the scheme does not automatically become refundable because the buyer is a tourist.

Check the transaction while you are still shopping

Participating retailers can issue a paper based or paperless tax free transaction. With a digital transaction, the tourist normally receives a link by text message to the Planet shopper portal. Transactions can also be tracked through the Planet Tax Free ME app.

If a paper invoice image fails verification, the Federal Tax Authority advises the tourist to contact the store and have the problem corrected before leaving the UAE. This is why checking the transaction list during the trip is useful. The departure desk cannot correct a retailer’s missing or unreadable submission after the tourist has left.

Online purchases can be included when the website is registered for ecommerce tax free shopping. Confirm this before ordering and make sure the purchase is connected to the correct travel document.

What to bring for validation

You need the original valid passport or the original GCC identity card used for entry. Copies are not accepted. You should also have the eligible goods and a valid ticket or confirmed booking that shows you are leaving the UAE.

Purchased goods may be selected for inspection. Keep them accessible and present them at a staffed Planet validation desk before checking in any suitcase that contains them. Packing tax free items at the bottom of a sealed bag can create avoidable stress.

Tax free transactions must be validated within 90 days of the invoice date. After successful validation at departure, the tourist must leave the UAE within six hours. If that period expires, the approval is cancelled and the validation process has to be repeated.

Where validation can be completed

Planet operates self service kiosks and staffed validation desks at designated airports, land borders and sea ports. Kiosks are also available at some shopping malls and hotels.

For a kiosk in a mall or hotel, the tourist needs an online boarding pass for a departure within 24 hours as well as the original passport. At an exit point, allow extra time even if the kiosk itself is quick. The official service page estimates about three minutes for a kiosk and five minutes at a staffed desk, but queues and an inspection can make the complete process longer.

Follow the instructions shown after scanning the travel document. If the system asks for an inspection, go to the staffed desk with the goods. Do not proceed through check in and security until that requirement has been cleared.

How much money comes back

The refund is not the full VAT amount shown across all receipts. The scheme deducts 13 percent from the VAT amount requested, plus AED 3.60 for each tax free transaction. Several small purchases issued as separate transactions will therefore carry several fixed deductions.

After validation, the tourist can choose an available refund method. Bank card refunds are expected within nine calendar days. Cash processing averages about three minutes after immigration at a participating exchange counter. The maximum VAT refund paid in cash is AED 35,000, while the official service page states no equivalent maximum for a card refund.

WeChat and Alipay refunds are listed as instant options. Availability still depends on the method offered during the transaction and validation journey.

A simple departure plan

Review the current requirements on the Federal Tax Authority tourist refund page before travelling to the airport or border. Open the Planet transaction list and confirm that each intended claim appears correctly.

Keep the passport, booking and goods together. Arrive with enough time for a possible inspection. Validate before checking in the relevant goods, choose the refund method and keep the confirmation until the money arrives.

The expanded network makes the scheme more convenient, but it does not replace those basic steps. The best refund experience usually starts at the shop, not at the exit point.
