UAE Two-Year Car Registration From 2027: Who Can Apply?

UAE owners of eligible light vehicles will be able to apply for registration valid for two years instead of one from 1 January 2027. The longer period is an option rather than an automatic extension, and approval remains with the relevant vehicle-licensing authority.

The official Emirates News Agency announcement says Article 98 of Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 allows a light-vehicle owner to request the two-year validity period. The announced eligibility conditions are that the vehicle was brand new when it was first registered and is no more than six years old from its date of manufacture.

Two-year registration rule at a glance

Requirement Announced position What the owner should check
Start date 1 January 2027 Use the option only after the licensing authority activates it
Vehicle category Light vehicle Confirm the classification on the traffic file
First registration Vehicle was brand new when initially registered Keep the original registration and purchase history
Vehicle age No more than six years from manufacture Check the manufacturing date, not only the model year
Approval Subject to the licensing authority Do not assume eligibility guarantees approval

Who may qualify for the two-year option?

The published rule points to three central tests. First, the vehicle must be classified as a light vehicle. Second, it must have been brand new at the time of its initial registration. Third, it must not be older than six years from the manufacturing date when the application is considered. The responsible licensing authority still decides whether to approve the requested extension.

A used imported car is not automatically eligible merely because it is new to its current UAE owner. Likewise, a six-year-old threshold should not be calculated from the date on which the present owner bought the vehicle. Owners should compare the manufacturing information, first-registration record and vehicle file rather than relying on the sales advertisement.

  • Confirm that the traffic file classifies the car as a light vehicle.
  • Check that it was brand new when first registered.
  • Verify the manufacturing date and current vehicle age.
  • Review insurance and inspection requirements for the requested period.
  • Settle any fines or blocks required by the licensing service.
  • Apply through the official authority for the emirate of registration.
  • Check the issued certificate and new expiry date after payment.

Two years is not an automatic renewal

The official announcement says owners “may apply” and that the extension is subject to approval. A qualifying age and history therefore do not silently change an existing certificate. Owners should continue following the current expiry date until the licensing authority has accepted the application and issued a record showing the longer validity.

Dubai drivers can review the present process in our Dubai vehicle-registration renewal guide. It explains the usual relationship between testing, insurance, applicable fines and the issued digital certificate. The 2027 option may change the validity period, but owners should not assume that it removes every other renewal condition.

How to calculate the vehicle’s age

The announced wording refers to the date of manufacture. That date may differ from the model year, purchase date, import date or first UAE registration date. Check the vehicle record and documents accepted by the licensing authority. If the dates appear inconsistent, obtain clarification before paying for insurance or another service based on an assumed two-year term.

Do not alter a document or rely on an unofficial online age calculator. Keep the purchase invoice, first-registration information and any manufacturer record available. The evidence approach in our UAE consumer invoice guide is useful when organising purchase and ownership documents.

Insurance, inspection and fees still need confirmation

The national announcement confirms the longer registration option and core vehicle conditions, but it does not set out one universal public checklist for insurance duration, technical inspection, fees or emirate-specific processing. Those operational details should come from the relevant licensing authority when the service becomes available.

Before applying, check whether insurance must cover the entire requested registration period, whether a technical inspection is needed and how fees are calculated. A vehicle’s age alone does not prove its roadworthiness. Use our Dubai car-safety checklist for tyres, lights and emergency equipment, while following the official inspection standard for the actual transaction.

Fines and traffic-file restrictions

An otherwise eligible vehicle may still have an unresolved fine, ownership issue, insurance mismatch or traffic-file restriction that affects processing. Review the official account before starting and do not assume that choosing two years postpones an existing obligation. If a fine appears incorrect, use the formal review route rather than ignoring it.

Our Dubai traffic-fine review guide explains how to organise the notice, location, date and supporting evidence. Requirements vary by authority, so a successful review in one case does not automatically pause every registration deadline.

Planning travel with the longer certificate

A two-year UAE registration does not replace valid insurance, border documents or destination-country requirements. Before an inter-emirate journey, verify the certificate, insurance and vehicle condition using our UAE road-trip planning guide.

For international driving, read the Dubai-to-Oman border guide and confirm current requirements with the official border and insurance authorities. The longer domestic registration period should not be presented as automatic permission to cross a border.

How this fits with other 2027 traffic changes

Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 also introduces other rules from 1 January 2027, including new vehicle-ownership provisions, personal-mobility permits and a maximum driving duration. These are separate obligations. Eligibility for two-year registration does not change a driver’s duty to follow road-safety rules.

Drivers planning long routes should review our UAE nine-hour driving-limit guide. A valid registration certificate never makes it acceptable to drive while fatigued or exceed the applicable driving-time rule.

Questions people often ask

When will UAE two-year car registration become available?

The announced start date for the new regulations is 1 January 2027, subject to activation and procedures set by the relevant licensing authority.

Does every UAE car automatically receive two-year registration?

No. It is an application option for eligible light vehicles and remains subject to approval by the licensing authority.

How old can the vehicle be?

The official announcement says the vehicle must be no more than six years old from its date of manufacture.

Can a vehicle bought used qualify?

The key condition is that the vehicle was brand new when it was first registered. A later used-car purchase does not by itself prove or disprove eligibility; the licensing authority must verify the record.

Are insurance and inspection rules cancelled for two-year registration?

No such cancellation is stated in the official announcement. Owners must check the current insurance, inspection, fee and processing requirements with their licensing authority.
