Dubai Digital nol QR Tickets: How to Buy, Scan and Use Them

Passenger scanning a digital QR ticket from a smartphone at a Dubai public transport gate

Dubai passengers can now buy digital nol QR tickets through the nol Pay or S’hail apps and scan them on Metro, Tram and public buses. The official RTA QR-ticket service page says a traveller can select a single-trip ticket or one-day pass, choose zones or a destination, select regular or Gold class and receive the ticket instantly after payment.

The digital ticket adds an option for occasional users and visitors; it does not make existing nol cards invalid. The important differences are how the code is displayed, when validity begins and how a one-day pass expires.

Choose the correct ticket before paying

A single trip and a one-day pass serve different plans. Select the departure and destination if you do not understand the zone map, then check the class before payment. One ticket is required per passenger. If several digital tickets are bought together, the app displays the next code after the previous ticket has been used.

Regular nol users can compare the physical-card process in the Dubai nol card guide. Families should read the public transport with children guide before buying multiple tickets on one phone.

Ticket Before first use After activation Best for
Digital single trip Up to 90 days from purchase Used for the selected journey rules One planned journey
Digital one-day pass Up to 90 days from purchase Valid until midnight that calendar day Several trips in one day
Static paper QR ticket Purchased at supported machine or office Expires at 11.59pm on purchase day Traveller without an app ticket
Physical nol card Card-specific validity and balance Tap in and out normally Regular or repeat travel

Keep the live code available

RTA states that a digital QR ticket refreshes automatically and cannot be downloaded. A screenshot is therefore not a safe substitute. Maintain internet access and enough battery to open the app during entry, exit and transfers. Turn screen brightness up if the reader has difficulty and keep the code steady.

On buses, hold the phone screen facing up over the red reader near the entrance. At Metro gates, present the QR code to the entry reader and scan again as required at exit. Tram passengers should follow the validator instructions before and after travel.

A digital-ticket travel checklist

  • Install nol Pay or S’hail before reaching the gate.
  • Choose zones, destination and class carefully.
  • Keep internet access and sufficient phone battery.
  • Open the live code instead of using a screenshot.
  • Scan at check-in, check-out and required transfers.
  • Keep the ticket available until the full journey ends.
  • Remember that a one-day pass expires at midnight, not after 24 hours.

Understand midnight expiry

The one-day pass starts on the first tap and ends at midnight on that same calendar day. A first tap at 11pm does not create a pass valid until 11pm the following day. Travellers landing late should compare the cost with a single-trip ticket rather than assuming the day pass offers a full 24 hours.

The Dubai airport family guide helps late-arriving groups plan onward travel. The inter-emirate bus guide explains why a Dubai QR ticket should not be assumed valid on every service outside the city network.

Know what to do when the phone fails

Move aside so the gate remains clear, reopen the app and confirm that the correct unused ticket is displayed. If the code will not load, speak to official station staff rather than following instructions from a stranger. Do not share login details or one-time passwords.

If another form of transport is needed, the licensed taxi guide covers safer booking checks. The UAE emergency numbers guide is for genuine emergencies, not ordinary ticket support.

Use the new option for the right journey

Digital QR tickets are especially useful for occasional trips when a passenger wants to buy before reaching a station. A physical nol card can remain more convenient for frequent travel. Compare the journey pattern, number of passengers, phone access and expected travel after midnight before choosing.
