New UAE traffic regulations taking effect on 1 January 2027 require an appropriate child safety seat for children aged four and under. The seat must match the child’s weight and height, comply with applicable national standards and specifications, and normally be installed in a rear seat.
The official Emirates News Agency summary explains Article 11 of Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026. It also describes narrow medical and no-rear-seat exceptions. Parents should follow the seat manufacturer’s instructions and current police or licensing guidance for installation and enforcement details.
2027 child-seat rules at a glance
| Situation | Confirmed requirement | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Child aged four or under | Appropriate child safety seat | Match height and weight limits |
| Normal placement | Rear seat | Use an approved seating position |
| Medical exception | Official medical certificate and attendant in rear | Keep required evidence current |
| Vehicle without rear seats | Front seat may be used | Rear-facing seat and airbag deactivated |
| Standards | Applicable national specifications | Check seat approval and instructions |
Choose by the child’s size and seat limits
Age is only the legal starting point. The chosen seat must fit the child’s weight and height and be used within the manufacturer’s limits. Check the label, approval information, expiry or service-life guidance, and whether the seat is compatible with the vehicle’s belt or anchor system.
Avoid a used seat with an unknown crash history, missing label, damaged shell or incomplete parts. Use our UAE vehicle registration guide to review the vehicle record, but check the child-restraint system separately.
- Read both the vehicle manual and child-seat manual.
- Confirm the child’s current weight and height.
- Use an approved rear seating position.
- Route and tighten the belt or anchors exactly as instructed.
- Set the harness at the correct height and snugness.
- Remove bulky clothing that interferes with the harness.
- Replace a seat when the manufacturer or crash guidance requires it.
Rear-seat placement is the standard rule
The official summary requires child seats in the rear. Do not move a child forward for convenience or because the journey is short. Choose the rear position permitted by both manuals and ensure the seat does not interfere with another restraint or folded seatback.
Before a family trip, combine the restraint check with the tyre and emergency items in our Dubai car-safety guide. Our UAE road-trip guide helps plan breaks without loosening safe restraint habits.
The front-seat exception is narrow
A child seat may be installed in front only when the vehicle has no rear seats. In that situation the official summary requires a rear-facing installation and deactivation of the airbag. A front passenger airbag can cause severe injury to a rear-facing child seat if it deploys.
Do not guess whether an airbag is off from a dashboard symbol you do not understand. Check the vehicle manual and obtain qualified help. If the airbag cannot be deactivated as required, use a suitable vehicle rather than improvising.
Medical exception requirements
An exception is described where a child’s medical condition prevents use of a protective seat. It requires an official medical certificate and an attendant accompanying the child in the rear. A parent’s verbal explanation or an old general note should not be assumed sufficient.
Confirm who may issue the certificate, what it must state and whether it has a validity period. Keep it available during travel while protecting the child’s private medical information. For emergency preparation, our UAE emergency numbers guide lists the main response channels.
Check installation before every journey
A correct seat can become unsafe if the harness is twisted, an anchor is loose or luggage can strike the child. Before departure, press at the belt path to check movement, verify the harness and secure loose objects. Never add unapproved cushions, clips or toys that alter the tested restraint system.
In rain or reduced visibility, do not rush the loading process. Use the UAE rain-driving guide and the Dubai traffic-rule evidence guide for wider journey preparation.
