31 August is the date most UAE families need to circle. That is when students return for the 2026–2027 academic year, and the usual late-summer scramble is already close enough to feel real.
This year also brings an admission change that matters to families entering kindergarten or Grade 1. The age cut-off has moved, which means some children who would previously have waited another year may now be eligible to start.
The school dates worth saving
The Ministry of Education calendar gives families a useful outline of the full year, not just the first day.
- 24 August 2026: administrative and teaching staff return.
- 31 August 2026: the academic year begins for students.
- 12–18 October 2026: first-semester midterm break, with classes resuming on 19 October.
- 14 December 2026–3 January 2027: winter break. Students return on 4 January.
- 5–11 April 2027: spring break, followed by a return to school on 12 April.
- 2 July 2027: the academic year ends.
These dates provide the national framework for public and private schools. Parents should still check messages from their own school for orientation days, transport timings and any arrangements for a staggered first morning.
The admission age rule has changed
For schools and kindergartens that begin their year in August or September, the admission age will now be calculated on 31 December instead of 31 August.
Under the new Ministry of Education rule, a child must turn three by 31 December for Pre-KG or FS1, four for KG1 or FS2, five for KG2 or Year 1, and six for Grade 1 or Year 2.
The distinction between new and existing students is important. The change applies to new admissions from the 2026–2027 academic year. Children who are already enrolled continue under the rules used when they originally registered. Schools that start their academic year in April will also keep their existing 31 March cut-off.
Transfers can be less straightforward because placement is based on the last grade a child successfully completed and the approved equivalency process. If your child is changing curriculum or arriving from outside the UAE, confirm the placement with the school rather than working from age alone.
Make the first week easier now
The practical preparation is fairly ordinary, but leaving it until the final weekend makes everything harder. Move bedtime and breakfast closer to the school routine a little at a time. Try on uniforms before removing every tag, check shoes properly and make sure last year’s backpack still sits comfortably.
It is also worth confirming the details that tend to cause first-day confusion:
- the exact bus pickup and drop-off points;
- the first-day arrival and dismissal times;
- lunch, water bottle and stationery requirements;
- updated medical and emergency contact information; and
- the school’s rules for labels, devices and permitted uniform items.
If you drive, allow more time than the route normally takes. School-area traffic changes quickly once everyone returns on the same morning.
There is still time to shop carefully
Dubai Summer Surprises runs until 30 August and includes back-to-school offers, according to the official 2026 retail calendar. A discount is only useful if it is for something the school actually requires, so check the supply list before buying multipacks, devices or extra uniform pieces.
