UAE Driving Licence Rules From 2027: Validity and Eyesight Checks Explained

UAE traffic regulations taking effect on 1 January 2027 set out driving-licence validity periods by nationality and age and introduce eyesight standards for different vehicle categories. Drivers should distinguish the federal framework from the exact renewal process operated by the licensing authority in their emirate.

The official Emirates News Agency summary identifies Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 as the source. It says UAE and GCC nationals receive ten-year validity in the stated adult renewal circumstances, while expatriate residents receive five years. Licensing authorities retain an important role in application and medical assessment.

Licence validity at a glance

Driver situation Announced validity Practical check
UAE or GCC national Ten years in the stated adult renewal cases Confirm eligibility at renewal
Expatriate resident Five years in the stated adult renewal cases Check residency and file details
Temporary licence holder reaching 21 Moves into the applicable adult framework Follow authority instructions
Eyesight Standards depend on vehicle category Use an accepted test provider
Foreign eyesight report May be accepted by licensing authority Confirm format and recency first

Do not confuse validity with eligibility

A ten- or five-year card period does not guarantee that every application will be approved. The driver must still meet identity, residence, medical, eyesight and traffic-file requirements. A suspended, expired or inappropriate vehicle-category licence cannot be made valid simply by relying on the general duration.

Before renewal, compare the name, Emirates ID, date of birth and licence category. Our Dubai registration renewal guide covers vehicle records, which are separate from the driver’s own licence.

  • Check the expiry date well before travel or work commitments.
  • Confirm the correct licensing authority for the traffic file.
  • Use an approved eyesight-testing channel.
  • Bring corrective lenses when normally required for driving.
  • Verify the licence category for the intended vehicle.
  • Keep the payment receipt and digital confirmation.
  • Recheck official requirements after 1 January 2027.

Eyesight standards vary by vehicle

The official summary says ordinary light-vehicle drivers must achieve a minimum visual-acuity level, with stricter standards for light and heavy buses and light and heavy mechanical equipment. Colour vision also matters for recognising traffic-light signals. This is a road-safety assessment, not a complete eye-health examination.

If the test shows a concern, follow the qualified examiner’s advice rather than trying another outlet until a pass appears. Drivers should use required glasses or contact lenses consistently. The Dubai car-safety checklist complements, but does not replace, driver fitness.

Reports issued outside the UAE

The regulations allow licensing authorities to accept eyesight examination reports issued outside the country. “May accept” is not an automatic guarantee. Before paying for a foreign report, ask which providers, languages, test fields, authentication method and issue dates are accepted.

People preparing documents can use our UAE document-attestation guide to organise verification questions, while recognising that an eyesight report may follow a specific licensing process rather than general attestation.

Plan renewal with other motoring duties

Drivers approaching January should not combine unrelated rules. The two-year vehicle registration guide concerns qualifying vehicles, while the five-vehicle resident limit guide concerns ownership records. Neither changes the driving-licence eyesight requirement.

Review fines and traffic-file details early using the Dubai traffic-fine guide. Long-distance drivers should also read the nine-hour driving-limit guide.
